Video and Podcast Resources on Ursula K Leguin's Final Three Earthsea Books
38 lectures in video and podcast format leading you through these fantasy narratives
Several years ago, I designed and taught an online course at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design on one massively important fantasy series of novels and short stories, set Ursula K Leguin’s narrative universe of “Earthsea”. I am teaching that same class again this current semester. (I have plans to develop an open-enrollment version of that course later on down the line, and I’ll write about that once it’s ready)
As our textbook, we used the recently published omnibus volume that gathers all the books and stories of Earthsea along with Charles Vess’ illustrations and Leguin’s own reflections and reminiscences.
As resources for the class, I created entire sets of lecture videos in my main YouTube channel for my students, covering all of the key themes, characters, and plot-points. More recently, I took all of of those videos and edited them into Sadler’s Lectures podcast episodes as well. An earlier resource post included all of the video and podcast lectures on the first three books of the Earthsea series.
Now I’ve got organized links for you on all of the lectures of the final three books, Tehannu, Tales From Earthsea, and The Other Wind. Tehannu and The Other Wind are, like the original trilogy short novels that center around several of the characters from the earlier trilogy, namely Ged, Tenar, Ogion, and Lebannen, but they also introduce us to a number of new characters who play their important roles in the narrative, including Therru/Tehanu, Auntie Moss, Alder, Seserakh, and Seppel.
Tales from Earthsea is a bit different, in that it is a collection of short stories that fill in some important parts of Earthsea’s history and narratives about our key characters. We find out how the famous school of Roke came about, learn more of the lives of Ogion and Ged, and get introduced to a dragon, Orm Irian, who will also play an important role in The Other Wind.
