Hi Greg,

Nice piece! A lot of this 'universal doubt' happens downstream of Descartes of course. I believe it is Nietzsche who first dubs it a 'philosophy of doubt', and Hannah Arendt picks up the term in her essays. But you are absolutely correct: doubt had a specific purpose for Descartes. He would, I think we both agree, be horrified at where he path he inadvertently opened up led.
