In this session, we talk about New Year’s resolutions and what’s good about them. what can be problematic, what you might want to replace them with. We discuss what New Years resolutions are, how commonly they are made, and who one is making them to. Then we look at what features of them, or assumptions about them, can turn them into negative and problematic commitments. It might actually be good to break one’s New Year resolutions and replace them with something more manageable and realistic, like more flexible goals for which one can determine the proper means. This will often include focusing on what habits one needs to make, develop, reinforce, or break.
